“The secret of success is consistency of purpose.”
When looking up the word consistency you will see the following synonyms: constancy, regularity, equilibrium, stability, steadiness. Consistency is the key to success in every area of your life, but since this is a blog about fitness, we are going to talk about that!
We have discussed before how the building blocks of fitness include nutrition, resistance training, and adequate cardio. However, if you slink over to the treadmill once a month, you likely won’t see the results you are looking for. If you pick up those 10 lb weights once a week, your progress will be incredibly (we’re talking snail with a cracked shell) slow. Feeling the urge to “eat clean” once a year (because who doesn’t have New Year Resolutions)? Then we’re sorry, but we place you in the category of
bad – ahem, sorry – FAD dieters. What have we been beating into your head since the beginning?
FITNESS IS A LIFESTYLE!!!!
In order to make something a lifestyle you have to make it a priority, develop the discipline, and establish consistency. Don’t misread this, we absolutely are not saying that you have to be perfect. Perfection is not possible. But you should still make an effort to achieve your goals. Consistency. Discipline. These two things can get you there.
Do NOT over commit. Don’t be that person who immediately commits to a 6 day weight training program when you are used to that 10 lb workout once a week. It would be insane to sign up for a half marathon when you haven’t run more than 40 ft from your mailbox to your front door in the rain. Make SMART goals. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time bound.
SPECIFIC – I would like to fit into my wedding dress as a surprise for my husband.
MEASURABLE – I need to lose 15 lbs. and 5 inches to get into that dress.
ACHIEVABLE – I have the time and resources to commit to a fitness program.
RELEVANT – It is important that I fit into my wedding dress to surprise my husband with a vow renewal ceremony.
TIME BOUND – The ceremony will be on our anniversary, which is in 3 months.
