Losing weight 101: How to eat an Elephant

For all our animal lovers out there...no we’re not talking about eating an actual elephant!

But, if we were...how would you do it?

 

The answer is a lot simpler than we think, and you’re probably going to laugh when you read it:

 

You eat an elephant 1 bite at a time.

 

Duh, right?!?!

 

So why don’t we use this same logic when it comes to reaching our weight loss goals?

 

For anyone looking to lose 30+ lbs, like most of our clients, weight loss is going to be a journey...it’s not something you can conquer in 1 day, or one month...just like you can’t eat an elephant in one bite!

 

But what ends up happening is you try to change all your habits at once: eat perfect (whatever that means?), exercise 6 days a week, drink all your water...everything you’ve read that will get you to your goals. 

 

At the end of the day you lay in bed googling weight loss tips determined that tomorrow is going to be your day. You’re going to get up at 5:00 am and workout, prep your meals perfectly, drink all your water, and it’s going to be great.

 

Then the alarm goes off and your motivation goes out the window. Or maybe you do make it through a few days and then you fall off, discouraged, and it zaps your confidence then you go back to old habits. 

 

You’re not alone. A new day prefers old habits. Yesterday’s plan is today’s unchecked box.

 

There are three reasons most people fail to reach their goals: lack of support, lack of accountability, and lack of knowledge.

 

And one of the biggest things to learn is the incremental growth is still growth!

 

In fact, if you start with one habit that you want to improve and stick with it, over time you will be AMAZED with how your body responds.

 

Another great analogy is climbing a mountain for the first time in 20 years.

 

You’re standing at the bottom of the mountain, the peak looks intimidating. You’re miles away with baggage on your back and hiking boots that aren’t what they used to be. It’s overwhelming. Besides, what would actually happen if you made it to the top? Will there be another peak? Sure, someone else has done it, but is it possible for YOU to get there? Will you always have to be here? No breaks? No days off or off days? The idea of going the extra mile is cool, but the first mile can feel pretty steep.

 

One step at a time, that’s how you make it to the top of the mountain.

 

One bite at a time, that’s how you eat an elephant.

 

One habit at a time, that’s how you reach your goals.

 

Goals don’t require magic tricks. You can’t just make an elephant disappear. Reaching your goals requires investment, not illusion.

 

To help you reach your goals, here are 5 ways to make it easier to eat the elephant:

 

1. Have a plan for small victories.Focus on your habits, not the results. The results will come.

 

2. Find support. You don’t have to do this on your own. I’m not talking about your cousin’s friend who is a CrossFit coach, or someone selling shakes that claims you’ll lose 30 lbs in a month. Work with a professional who can guide you through your journey with a program made specifically for you.

 

3. Appreciate the moment. Today is the only day you can win.

 

4. Speak positive about struggles. Don’t demonize scars or failures, embrace them as landmarks. A knight in shining armor has fought no battles.

 

5. Value the finish line not the finish time. It ain’t a marathon or a sprint, it’s your life. Live it daily.

 

Bottom line: Your path is yours. Take ownership, but don’t rush and force yourself into something you can’t sustain or that makes you feel guilty. No one can eat an elephant in one bite, everyone will take a different amount of time to finish. Give yourself grace and enjoy the process.

 

Incremental growth is still growth.
