Fiber After 40 in Milford, Delaware: The Overlooked Nutrient for Energy, Weight & Gut Health

You’ve probably been told to eat more protein. You’ve probably heard that strength training matters more every year. Both are true — and we coach both hard here at CNU Fit. But there’s a quieter nutrient that most people over 40 are missing, and it’s costing them energy, steady blood sugar, and a comfortable gut: fiber.

Here’s the reality. Roughly 90% of women and 97% of men don’t hit the recommended daily fiber intake, and among older adults, intake runs about 40% below where it should be. That’s not a small gap. It’s one of the most common — and most fixable — nutrition problems we see walk through our doors.

Why fiber matters more after 40

As we age, two things quietly shift. Our digestion slows, and the community of bacteria living in our gut — your microbiome — becomes less diverse. That matters more than it sounds. A less diverse gut is linked to more low-grade inflammation, the kind of background “noise” that makes joints achier, recovery slower, and weight harder to manage. Recent research points directly at diet, and fiber specifically, as one of the strongest levers we have to keep that gut ecosystem healthy as we age.

When you eat fiber, your gut bacteria ferment it into compounds called short-chain fatty acids — butyrate is the headline one. In plain terms: fiber feeds the good bacteria, the good bacteria produce anti-inflammatory compounds, and those compounds help calm inflammation and support a stronger gut barrier. It’s one of the few things you can do at breakfast that pays off at the cellular level.

Two kinds of fiber, two different jobs

Not all fiber is the same, and you want both.

Soluble fiber dissolves into a gel in your stomach. It slows digestion, which helps blunt blood sugar spikes and can lower “bad” LDL cholesterol. You’ll find it in oats, beans, lentils, apples, citrus, carrots, and avocado. If afternoon energy crashes are your enemy, this is your friend.

Insoluble fiber doesn’t dissolve. It adds bulk and keeps things moving through your system — the answer to the sluggish digestion so many of us notice creeping in after 40. It lives in whole grains, the skins of fruits and vegetables, nuts, and seeds.

The fiber and muscle connection

Here’s where it ties back to everything else we do together. High-fiber foods are more filling, so you naturally eat less without feeling deprived — that’s a real advantage when you’re working to protect muscle mass while trimming fat mass. Pair that fiber with adequate protein and your resistance training, and you’ve built a body composition strategy that actually holds up over time. Fiber isn’t a replacement for protein or lifting. It’s the third leg of the stool.

What to do this week in Milford

You don’t need a total diet overhaul. Start here:

  1. Add one fiber source to a meal you already eat. A half cup of berries on your breakfast, a side of beans at lunch, a handful of almonds in the afternoon.
  2. Aim toward 22–30 grams a day. Women over 50 target around 22 grams; men around 28–30. Don’t chase perfection — chase progress.
  3. Go slow and drink water. Add fiber gradually over a couple of weeks. Ramp up too fast and you’ll feel bloated. Pair every increase with more water so it works with your body, not against it.
  4. Reach for whole foods first. Fruits, vegetables, beans, oats, and whole grains give you fiber plus the vitamins and minerals your body is working harder to absorb after 40.

Small, consistent changes are exactly the kind of work that compounds — the same way your strength does when you show up week after week.
